主要用作生产产品过程中的添加剂，如橡胶工业、塑料工业、纺织工业、化妆品工业等领域中。橡胶工业中，是天然、合成胶及胶乳的硫化活性剂，还用作软化剂。塑料工业中用作增塑剂、稳定剂及润滑剂。纺织工业中用作纱线润滑剂及制造丝光膏柔软剂。在化妆品工业中，是制造一般乳化制品不可缺少的原料，用于配制雪花膏、冷霜、粉底霜、剃须膏、发乳及护肤乳液等。还用于制造脱模剂、抛光膏、消泡剂、金属浮选剂，油漆平光剂、蜡纸打光剂、纺织品防水剂等产品，是油溶性颜料的溶剂，也是制造硬脂酸钙、硬脂酸钾铅等硬脂酸酯及硬脂酸盐的原料。
